Benildus Hall, originally constructed in 1959, and designed in the “International or Modernist Style”, functioned as the main classroom building for the College of Santa Fe. This project included the renovation of the existing building that serves an expanded Creative Writing program and an addition that provides new space for the Contemporary Music Department. The Music Department includes two recording studios, control rooms, practice rooms, world music school, composition and piano studios and a state of the art computer room.
The design integrates old and new by honoring the past, complementing the style of the existing building, and showcasing the present with an efficient, practical yet playful design where the elevation reflects the 5 line musical staff as a design for the windows. Included in the project is a shared performance space / multipurpose room off the main lobby between the existing building and the new addition.
